Layla

This girl just came to us in an established flock of a dozen chickens.  Her prior owner reports she is a Black giant Jersey adult hen.  She's a fairly large bird, weighing at least 6-8 pounds. She is the largest bird in the flock. I'm not sure of "Layla's" age but believe she is an adult and I'm guessing she's probably at least 2 years old??? The previous owner reports "the black ones are the best layers".

She's probably the healthiest looking bird in the flock, with extremely soft and clean plumage. She tolerates human contact when roosting or setting somewhere easily reached, but is still slightly nervous of me and will not stand easily to be caught. She is still fairly easy to catch when in a confined area, however. This bird appears to be fairly mellow and tolerant of the other birds, allowing them to burrow under her legs when they roost together.

I am fairly certain this hen is laying. She sometimes appears mildly broodish, willing to approach a nest with an egg or two and perhaps add her own to the clutch. I have also observed her constructing a nest around herself but she is usually on the nest for a brief period.
