Jersey Girl
This girl just came to us in an established flock of a dozen
chickens. Her prior owner
reports she is a Black giant Jersey adult hen. She's a fairly large bird, weighing at least 5-6 pounds. She is probably the second largest bird in the flock. I'm not sure of "Jersey Girl's" age but believe she is an adult and I'm guessing she's probably at least 2 years old??? The previous owner reports "the black ones are the best layers".

I suspect that this
hen is in molt due to her frumpy appearance. I do not believe this hen is laying but I am uncertain.
This
bird tolerates human contact when setting somewhere easily reached,
but she is fairly nervous and will squawk and eventually leave if
bothered too much. She will not stand easily to be caught but she is
still fairly easy to catch when in a confined area.
UPDATE! August 19, 2007 - Today I watched Jersey Girl lay a smooth beige egg with no spots or bumps.

A clutch of 5 eggs lies in one of the laying boxes. From left to right, the eggs shown were laid by Chatty Kathy, Jersey Girl, Wanderlust, Molly Brown, and Henny Penny. Both photos of the row of eggs are the same eggs with different lighting. It's hard to tell but Chatty Kathy's egg on the left is very pale tan but not white, almost cream-colored or off-white. Molly Brown's egg is second from the right and it is a beautiful green but the camera's flash washed out it's color.
