Chatty Kathy
This girl just came to us in an established flock of a dozen
chickens. Her prior owner
reports she is a Rhode Island Red adult hen but I am unsure of this and know nothing else of her breed. She's an average-sized bird of average weight, weighing at least 4-5 pounds. I'm not sure of "Chatty Kathy's" age but believe she is an adult and I'm guessing she's probably at least 2 years old???

She is quite vocal and often tries to range with the rooster. This
bird tolerates some gentle human contact when setting somewhere easily reached,
but she is fairly nervous and will squawk and leave if
bothered too much. She will not stand easily to be caught but she is
still fairly easy to catch when in a confined area.
This hen appears to be near the bottom of the
pecking order. She is in fairly good condition but is either molting
or is being hen-pecked at the tip of the bends in her wings.
Applying Bitter Yuck to these areas to discourage pecking from the
others did not seem to be the issue but I will continue to monitor
the situation.
I suspect this hen is laying but I am uncertain. She often investigates the laying boxes throughout the day, especially if they have an egg or two already in them. She appears to be fairly broodish at times, perhaps adding her own egg to the clutch and getting up often to turn the eggs underneath her. I have observed her building a nest around herself but she does not stay on the nest for long.
UPDATE! August 19, 2007 - Today I went to the coop and found Chatty Kathy sitting on an egg. Within a few minutes she added her own egg - a very
light tan or off-white egg that I've found on the floor three times in
the past. Apparently she can still be an Easter Egger and lay eggs that are not blue or green. Will she ever lay blue or green eggs?? New photos below:
Chatty Kathy shown roosting next to Rocky the rooster and Molly Brown with Sugarcakes on the roost above.

A clutch of 5 eggs lies in one of the laying boxes. From left to right, the eggs shown were laid by Chatty Kathy, Jersey Girl, Wanderlust, Molly Brown, and Henny Penny. Both photos of the row of eggs are the same eggs with different lighting. It's hard to tell but Chatty Kathy's egg on the left is very pale tan but not white, almost cream-colored or off-white. Molly Brown's egg is second from the right and it is a beautiful green but the camera's flash washed out it's color.
